Weddings
On the 27th of March 1892, Carrie Gerrtle led the way into history as the first bride married at Avondale United Methodist Church. W. R. Kirk officiated. Carrie and Walter Neel may have been married in the original church building; however, many weddings of this era were preformed at the parsonage or in the home of the bride's parents. We have no record of the exact location, but Carrie and Walter were the first couple listed in the Register of Marriages in the church archives. In the past 117 years, literally thousands of couples have been united in marriage under the auspices of Avondale United Methodist Church. One of only three sacraments of the Methodist Church, marriage is a sacred institution. While the church recognizes the social and legal aspects of the marriage vows, we see our primary responsibilities in the light of our commitment to God, who ordained and blessed marriage as an institution. Therefore, all wedding services at Avondale United Methodist Church are services of worship at which vows are made, prayers are offered to God, and God's blessings are given.
